Releases: Poobslag/turbofat

This release brings another wave of polish and bug fixes. Thanks for all the reports! Here’s a look at what’s new:
- Fixed more potential sources of crashing after puzzles.
- Added debug launcher for enhanced logging and crash reporting.
- Fixed mouse flickering with simultaneous gamepad/keyboard input.
- Adjusted save icon timing to show before transitions.
- Simplified cake tutorial with easier, non-random piece order.
- Improved performance and removed sound glitches when switching saves during puzzles.
- Fixed gamepad/keyboard focus issues with the settings menu.
Based on playtests, this new release fixes crashes for most players! But just in case, the Windows release now includes a debug launcher, turbofat-troubleshoot.bat
. If you're still experiencing game crashes, this launcher logs detailed information to a console which will help us determine the cause of the crash. Thanks so much for helping out!

With the surge of new players comes a surge of bug reports—oh no! This release is all about stability improvements and bug fixes. Thanks for your patience!
Key Changes & Fixes
-
Threading Disabled for Stability: Threading was used in two areas: to smooth out the game's startup and speed up shark level loading. However, for some unlucky players, it caused crashes and freezes. To prioritize stability, threading has been disabled.
-
Scene Transition Tweaks: I’ve cleaned up the code handling transitions, like the ticky-tacky block effect, to reduce crashes after levels finish. This should make things smoother for everyone.
-
Fat Creatures Bug Fixed: Fat creatures on the Avatar screen were sometimes saved as skinny—this was an oversight during the Creature Editor overhaul. It’s now fixed, so your creatures will stay as you designed them!
-
100% Completion Bug Fixed: Some edge cases were preventing players from reaching 100% completion when cutscenes were skipped. That’s resolved now, so completionists can rest easy!
-
Grade Cutoff Adjustments: I’ve revisited the grade cutoffs for a dozen levels:
- Easier Levels: Levels like "Angle Grinder," "Chompo And Bitey," and "A Little Extra" should now be a bit more forgiving.
- Tougher Levels: Levels like "Asparagus Trio" with overly generous time limits have been tightened up.
Other Improvements
-
Spanish Localization Improvements: Special thanks to Hish from the Turbo Fat Discord for helping refine the Spanish translation. I’ve also adjusted how translations work—fields now respond correctly to the game’s language settings instead of the operating system.
-
Community Contributions: Added a few new friends from the Turbo Fat Discord community. Hello, new friends!
-
Bug Fixes:
- Fixed the receipt shake effect on the results screen.
- Fixed an issue where the camera wouldn't shift to a new customer when restarting puzzles in Adventure Mode.
- Cleaned up cutscene dialogue typos (thanks to everyone who reported them!).

This is the final version which will go up on Steam on the 15th! It includes a few minor bug fixes but no major changes.
Fixed a few messages which were not being translated into Spanish.
Fixed a few clever ways to soft lock the tutorials. You really had to go out of your way, but it was possible!
Fixed some edge cases related to Sharks. Feeding a shark during Initial DAS resulted in a long delay and a weird "boop" sound, as though a nonexistent piece had landed. Sharks were also allowing you continue your combo for two additional pieces after feeding, instead of only one.
Fixed some issues on vertical displays, such as cutscene dialog appearing in the middle of the screen instead of the bottom, and the Training Menu speed slider not being centered. Turbo Fat is really meant for horizontal displays -- but we'd still like it to look as nice as possible.
Fixed an issue with brown dust on night chalkboards. The Night Onion's darkness affect wasn't being applied to the dust, so the chalkboard didn't look chalky, it looked... browny.
We're looking really good for the final release in two days! I'm going to try very hard not to touch the code very much until then. There are a ton of little code cleanup tasks I'd love to take on, but my time is probably better spent playtesting the game and making sure nothing breaks on release day. Wish me luck~ 🤞

Gosh I've been busy! Level goals, controller improvements, improved menus, and tons of smaller tweaks to Career Mode, controls, and a billion other things which came out of playtests. Thanks so much for helping playtest, the game has grown so much because of your help!
Levels now give you a goal up front, such as "Earn ¥250 in 3:00 for an A rank!" This is especially helpful in Career mode, since it tells you how to beat the boss level. It was kind of a secret before! This goal is also shown after the level so you can see how close you came.
Lots of controller improvements! Analog sticks are now supported, and the guideline gamepad controls have changed to be more comfortable. (If you prefer the old controls, they're still available as WASD inputs.) Also, if your controller comes unplugged while you're playing the game, the game will pause.
Menus should be a little easier to navigate. The selected menu buttons is brighter and glows slightly. Also, I've changed buttons which used to say "Quit" to saying "Main Menu" or "Back" so that you don't quit the game by mistake.
The mouse cursor hides itself if you use a keyboard or gamepad.
There is a settings button in cutscenes now, so you can adjust the volume or quit the game.
There's now a save indicator shown in the bottom right corner when Turbo Fat is saving its data! And I've removed the save scum prevention code which would send you backwards in career mode if you quit during a level! You can save scum to your heart's content, you naughty people.
The obscure Soft Drop Lock Cancel setting is now disabled by default. It was driving some players crazy, but you can enable it if you prefer it!
Clearing a career region now restarts the career day so to give you a fresh start! Before, you were kind of incentivized to quit to the main menu so you would have a chance to reach the boss level, which was silly.
I also fixed a ton of smaller bugs some of you reported! If you reported a smaller bug and you don't see it mentioned here, I probably fixed it. But you can check the list of known issues if you're not sure!

New results screen, better ranking system, cool visual improvements and some minor career mode enhancements!
Each level now ends with a results screen which breaks your score down into boxes, combos and all that extra stuff. It builds up with a pretty bar graph and Fat Sensei gives it their stamp of approval... or disapproval! There may be a secret grade if you fall well, well below their standards...
A new ranking system is based on per-level player data, instead of algorithms. The algorithmic approach didn't work for some of the more unique levels, and the new system has also been tuned to be gentler for levels in the two introductory areas, so new players won't be discouraged by low grades.
There are some visual improvements such as an outer-space background for outdoor cutscenes, and a smudgy effect for the chalkboards.
Career mode now gives some better feedback as your approach or reach your goal! I was worried people wouldn't understand what the mode is about, so hopefully now it's clear you're trying to reach and clear the boss level. There are also hints shown below the levels, and more advanced hints are shown as you progress through the game.
There are also a lot of small bugfixes, including some rotation bugs on the level "One Step Ahead", and a bug where especially hungry red sharks would sometimes eat an entire tetromino or pentomino by themselves. Leave some for the rest of us, you guys!!

Improved gamepad support, improvements to the Training Menu and Creature Editor, and new Level Icons!
The training menu has a fancy new level scroller, you can arrow left and right to select any level in your current region.
Level buttons now include level icons to give you a hint about what surprises the level has in store! This should help you get further in Career Mode so you can avoid specific mechanics you don't like.
The creature editor now includes a gamepad-friendly color picker. A mouse and keyboard still makes things easier, but is no longer necessary.
Each Career region now has its own set of music, so you'll hear different songs playing levels in Merrymellow Marsh versus Lemony Thickets.
The settings menu has protections for UI controls to prevent gamepad users from locking themselves out of changing their controls.

A new creature editor, improved UI, and rebalanced levels!
The new creature editor has big colorful icons with different creature parts, and walks you through creating your monster from start to finish.
There are other UI improvements throughout the game as well, including an all new settings menu, and colorful buttons on the main menu and other menus.
Vega Churn Twelve has been removed, and its levels have been rebalanced and pushed out to the other regions instead. Keep an eye out for some new levels!

A big fancy ending, credits, fullscreen, gamepad support and more!
A big fancy ending awaits players who complete the final challenge of Chocolava Canyon will be treated to a special cutscene and ending credits! Oh boy!
The credits are now available via a button on the main menu! Players who have cleared Chocolava Canyon will get "big fancy credits" and see some cool stuff they maybe don't want to see yet.
Note: For you eager beavers who already cleared Chocolava Canyon, you can restart Chocolava Canyon with the CHAP07
cheat and beat the final level to see the ending.
For those of you who really don't want to be spoiled -- just don't click the 'Credits' button and you should be fine! Otherwise, depending on your progress you might see the 'big fancy credits' and have the ending spoiled.
There a new fullscreen option available in the settings menu, which enables a borderless fullscreen mode. Let me know if you see utility in any other modes that aren't offered here! I am trying to keep things simple.
Improved Keyboard and gamepad UI support in some places such as the settings menu. You should now be able to switch tabs using the keyboard, by arrowing up to the tab area.
Other bug fixes:
- The Linux executable now has execute permissions.
- Fixed a bug where repeat levels sometimes showed up in Career mode.
- Story completion percent (shown in the chapter menu) now includes epilogue and prologue scenes.
- Replaced the Godot boot splash image

Cheese pieces, lives, and hardcore levels!
This release adds a bunch of new Cheese levels to Chocolava Canyon. These levels include new triangular pieces and will force you to relearn everything you knew about Turbo Fat. Good luck!
Career mode now gives you 3 lives -- if you lose all your lives you'll have to start over from the start of the chapter. Be careful!
Career mode's new hardcore levels give you a chance at an extra life... but they're harder, and you only get ONE life on them. They're a worthwhile risk for some of the harder areas!
v0.8101 note: The 0.8100 release had a tutorial bug! I've fixed the tutorials in this release.
