Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Method: # sox blah.ogg -t ub -c 1 -r 48000 - | sudo ./pwm 48000 PWM with second order noise shaping: # sox blah.ogg -t ub -c 1 -r 48000 - | sudo ./pwm 48000 2 Theory of operation: We abuse Timer Counter 2 at port 0x42 of the Programmable Interval Timer at port 0x43 in Mode 0 as a PWM to output PCM sound over the internal PC speaker. The nature of the equidistant starting pulses created by he PWM causes Harmonics, starting at the switching frequency. As the counter runs at a fixed frequency of 1193182 Hz, we need to trade duty cycle resolution to switching frequency. In addition to moving the switching frequency out of the hearing range, it is also good to have a bigger speaker with better low-pass characteristics to attenuate any remaining Harmonics. With some speakers it even makes sense to use a lower switching frequency, in the hearing range even, to get a better duty cycle resolution: # sox blah.ogg -t ub -c 1 -r 16000 - | sudo ./pwm 16000 Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) Method: # sox blah.ogg -t s16 -c 1 -r $((1000000/16)) - | sudo ./sdm 1 PDM with second order noise shaping: # sox blah.ogg -t s16 -c 1 -r $((1000000/16)) - | sudo ./sdm 2 Theory of operation: We abuse Speaker Data Enable Bit 1 at port 0x61 of the Keyboard Controller as an on/off switch for the PDM Method to output PCM sound over the internal PC speaker. Simply writing to port 0x61 delays almost exactly 1 microsecond, which gives us a switching frequency of around 1 MHz. We obtain the PDM by doing a Sigma Delta Modulation of the highly oversampled input signal. The nice thing with the PDM Method is, that due to the use of the Sigma Delta Modulation at high switching frequencies, the quantization noise is pushed out of the hearing range and, in contrast to the PWM Method, nicely distributed. Same as with the PWM Method, having a bigger speaker helps attenuating quantization and jitter noise. Please also read "Understanding PDM Digital Audio" by Thomas Kite. Troubleshooting: If writing to port 0x61 delays a lot more or a lot less than 1 microsecond on your hardware, you should measure for the correct frequency: # sudo ./measure measured frequency: 977794 Hz measured frequency: 977947 Hz measured frequency: 977804 Hz measured frequency: 977840 Hz And put the average frequency as the output rate of sox: # sox blah.ogg -t s16 -c 1 -r $((977846/16)) - | sudo ./sdm 1
