MapX Helm Charts

Set of instructions to deploy MapX in a Kubernetes cluster.

Prerequisites

Install:

It is recommended to configure autocompletion for these tools. Please refer to their documentation for detailed instructions (this may vary depending on the OS and terminal used).

Useful aliases:

alias k=kubectl
alias kctx=kubectx
alias kns=kubens

Deployment

  1. Load kubeconfig file to configure access to the cluster:

    export KUBECONFIG=<path to kubeconfig>
  2. Deploy utilities Helm charts

  3. Fill ./charts/mapx/values.yaml with the values required by MapX to be deployed in the k8s cluster.

  4. Deploy MapX Helm chart

Optionally:

  1. Fill ./charts/mapx-documentation/values.yaml with the values required by MapX documentation to be deployed in the k8s cluster.

  2. Deploy MapX documentation Helm chart

Add Helm repositories

Cluster utilities Helm charts

Helm provides a way to perform an install-or-upgrade as a single command. Use helm upgrade with the --install command. This will cause Helm to see if the release is already installed. If not, it will run an install. If it is, then the existing release will be upgraded.

--atomic               if set, upgrade process rolls back changes made in case of failed upgrade. The --wait flag will be set automatically if --atomic is used
--cleanup-on-fail      allow deletion of new resources created in this upgrade when upgrade fails
--debug                enable verbose output
--timeout duration     time to wait for any individual Kubernetes operation (like Jobs for hooks) (default 5m0s)
--wait                 if set, will wait until all Pods, PVCs, Services, and minimum number of Pods of a Deployment, StatefulSet, or ReplicaSet are in a ready state before marking the release as successful. It will wait for as long as --timeout

⚠ Please note that the versions used in this document may not be the latest by the time you read it. If --version is not specified, the latest version is used automatically.

Cert-manager

To begin issuing certificates, an Issuer/ClusterIssuer resource needs to be set up. ClusterIssuers for Let's Encrypt (staging and production) are available in ./utilities/cert_manager/. Both of these ClusterIssuers are configured to use the HTTP01 challenge provider.

spec.acme.email must be filled before deploying these manifests in the cluster. The email is required by Let's Encrypt and used for certificate expiration and update notifications.

kubctl apply -f ./utilities/cert_manager/

Longhorn

Longhorn is the CSI driver recommended by SixSq to deploy MapX in a Kubernetes cluster.

MapX

⚠ Recommendation from Sokube: databases should not be deployed in a k8s cluster especially for production.

Make sure you have access to a functional MapX database from the cluster before deploying MapX.

If a pre-populated instance of MapX is used, import the userdata folder into the dedicated volume.
