Open Gov Data and DataPublic
"Information becomes more valuable as it is shared, less valuable as it is hoarded" [Public.resource.org].
Open Government Data is raw public data that everyone is free to use, re-use and re-distribute. In the political and social sphere, Open Data gives individuals the power to access, analyze, engage and build upon public information!
Open Data is the mechanism by which government can be more transparent. It is the channel for driving meaningful exchanges about government matters, and finding solutions to issues that matter most to citizens. The Open Data Principles, the Open Data Handbook and Open Knowledge foundation’s Working Group on Open Gov’t Data can help guide policy considerations for an Open Data initiative.
DataPublic is the mechanism for making Open Government Data available, consumable, actionable and interactive. DataPublic portal includes an Open Data catalogue feature that enables government to:
- upload data files into DataPublic’s own data store
- link to data files on remote data stores (websites, ftp sites, data stores, etc.)
- embed datasets from data stores via web services & Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
DataPublic open data catalogue gives citizens options to download, interact and visualize datasets, and gives organizations flexibility in how they choose to publish their open data.
DataPublic helps governments engage constituents by facilitating information exchanges that are visual, current, interactive and accessible. DataPublic is a fully-featured website with a powerful content management system based on Drupal 7 open source project. It includes over a dozen custom features that offer:
- Speed: Initiatives can be rolled-out faster by focusing on building content vs. infrastructure
- Control: Powerful backend empowers content authors to keep information current
- Flexibility: Modular architecture enables managing layout, features & content on-the-fly
- Mobility: Mobile-responsive layout adjusts content dynamically to desktop & mobile browsers
- Standards: Web standards, APIs & web services can power other sites & applications
