Netherlands Overview

Netherlands decided on a public-private partnership regarding the distribution of eID. As a result, the government provides some of the eID components and leaves others to the private sector.

In Netherlands, each citizen has a Burgerservicenummer (BSN) a unique identifier. The number can be found on the passport, ID-card or driver’s license[1].

DigiD is one of the authentication schemes for citizens used in Netherlands. It relies on a username/password authentication with a two-factor verification.

eHerkenning introduces a standardized login system deployed by the Dutch government and used by private sector organizations.

Idensys (https://www.idensys.nl) introduces a system comprising the existing authentication mechanisms like DigiG, EHerkenning, and other logins used by different banks. One additional goal of Idensys is to protect the privacy.

Unfortunately, we were not able to find any official technical documentation describing the authentication messages between the participants for any of the mentioned authentication schemes.
