so that it also works with commits without any file.

I had problems running this and stumbled over the linked comment in stackoverflow. This fixed it for me. Maybe pull it to make the script more robust.

@robkub do you know of an example repo on github that has this issue? It would be convenient to have a ready test-case.

No, I only had the problem at work.
I also when working on a git-svn repository, as the commentator in the stackoverflow.
