Ideas for a future Rebrand & Name Change

I think the current name, while I love it, is a bit ambiguous for the end user. If the goal is to become a replacement for Google Maps, then it may be hard for people to find with the current name.

I began looking for an app like this about a week ago. I searched "open source street maps" or something similar. Had this shown up as a result I wouldn't have recognized it as a map.

Instead I found openstreetmap, and through their community found this project.

This project is the most promising I have seen for a Google Maps competitor. I think a name more suited to the public would be advantageous, and a name change is best done sooner rather than later.

We could also call it OpenStreetMaps :D just joking.. i dont know how much (if even slightly) it should resemble/include OSM. I guess the end users dont know it anyway. But i feel we should perhaps support that brand, and somehow include it? Thats how OsmAPP was born - just a app for browsing openstreetmap data.

I agree that the app name isnt quite obvious for end users. I agree that we could consider rebranding.

Though i think this could really take place a little later, once the basic features are done and somewhat stable - especialy #116 and #31. I think the main reason why this App doesnt have many users is not that they couldnt find it, but because it is not useful for them.

btw, i guess it would be useful to add some keywords like "open source maps" to get better SEO -> #129.

It's very hard to find a name that hasn't been used in 2023, sometimes just gotta use it anyway and avoid any trademark issues and hope you can outscale the competition.

It is hard to get a good name and a domain name in 2023 :D I am glad to hear "Open Maps" is not taken, i wonder if it is not even too generic. Its not a great name, rather a description 😅 Also i really liked your idea "Maap", but both names doesn't come with a satysfying domain name.

I wanted to stay as close to OpenStreetMap name to promote that project in the first place. I am not even sure about vision now, should this app come with whatever free maps? or just derivatives from OSM data? (only speaking about data layers, sattelites would be always outsourced)

And still there is my concern, that rebranding doesnt bring anything useful this early into the project. Renaming it further is easy, you just keep both names in the header and keep both domains working for some time. So i dont feel the pressure to change.
