There's no "Alpha 3100" model.
OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 and DECwindows Motif V1.2-4 (with patches) are
the current releases; I would *strongly* recommend an upgrade to
OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 or V6.2, if not to V7.1, and I'd recommend a
Motif upgrade to V1.2-3 (with patches), or to V1.2-4 (with patches).

The capabilities of DECterm are largely a superset of the VT240
series terminal capabilities. (There are some features, such as
the down-loadable character set (DRCS) support, that are missing.
Without knowing specifics, it's hard to say with any degree of
certainty if a particular application will work under DECterm.)
There are various graphics protocols and communications schemes used
on various Tektronix terminals, and on various VT-series terminals.
You will need to provide information on exactly which capabilities
are used. (See _DECwindows 4125 Emulator for VMS, Version 1.0, SPD
31.60.xx, for one emulator.)

No, DECterms don't do Tektronix graphics. All they know about is Regis.
For Tektronix, get xterm, e.g. from
http://www.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/ftp/michael/xterm.zip
ftp://www.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/pub/michael/xterm.zip
I forgot where the original version of this was. The above works here
on AXP/VMS 6.2.
How about DEC to enhance DECterm capability? Add this ancient Tek mode
to it. Can't be that hard...

... especially in view of the fact that they already have a Tektronix 4125
(Tek 4010, 4200 series compatible) Emulator for DECwindows.
However, this is available for VAX only, as far as I know; it appears
DEC is not willing to port this to Alpha ... (probably just a matter
of applying DECmigrate/VEST to get something working)

Net sure what you mean by "DCL command". Is that the window
that gets created from FileView, or something else?

I can help with the EVE stuff. The DECwindows EVE uses two
resource files, TPU.DAT and EVE.DAT. EVE.DAT is almost useless
because allthe widgets have been created by the time it gets read
(in other words, you can use it to set a default title, for example,
but you can't use it to set font names, etc.).
Second point is that EVE runs in a DECterm widget, so the
resource names for the EVE window are essentially the same as those
for a DECterm. Just use Tpu*<xyz> instead of DECW$TERMINAL*<xyz>
and put these in a TPU.DAT file in your DECW$USER_DEFAULTS directory
(usually SYS$LOGIN). As an example, here's an extract from some
news/e-mail exchanges from earlier this year:
===============================================================================
Rich `Lego-Master' Jesse -- 7633 <[email protected]> writes:
[...]
For some reason, I couldn't get that to work with my TPU.DAT. I had to use the
"Tpu*" prefix in my entries. Here's how mine looks:
Tpu*littleFontSetName: -Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--*-80-*-*-M-*-ISO8859-1
Tpu.Tpu$MainWindow.Columns: 164
Tpu.Tpu$MainWindow.Rows: 68
Note the 164-by-68 screen! And it's legible on a 100dpi VAXStation! :)
For an even smaller, and still legible (although it may cause headaches)
197-by-82 screen, change to:
Tpu*littleFontSetName: -misc-fixed-*-*-*--8-*-100-100-*-*-*-*
Tpu.Tpu$MainWindow.Columns: 198
Tpu.Tpu$MainWindow.Rows: 84
===============================================================================
I hope the above is clear. I haven't had need to use it, but
reports back from several people is that it does the trick.
> Now if I could tell the Alpha which font to use for DCL command,
> editor window etc. I could select an appropriate font.
Sorry, I don't know. You could try using the DECterm resources
with an asterisk, e.g., "*littleFontSetName", in DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT.
Even if that works, it may have undesirable side-effects on other
applications, but it's worth a try. Otherwise, ask CSC?

The files are in sys$common:[sysfont.decw.*]*.dat The directory file is the
fonts that really exist on a system and there is a
@sys$update:decw$mkfontdir.com command file that populates it.
I think that the alias file is manually edited so that you can substitute
fonts of your own choosing.
Note that these files only apply to a local X-Session, or an X-terminal that
is getting fonts served from that session.
For PC and UN*X X-11 servers you must read the documentation for them on how
to add or alias fonts.

It comes from having the application being developed on one specific
resolution and never tested on any other. Note that these applications
usually do not allow the user to specify the fonts.

The excursion package is now usually distributed with the VMS Software
and is on the pathworks CD. We still use it as terminal software when we
have a VMS box.
To start a session you have to do two things
1. In the account that you want to use on the VMS machine, you have to
enable in the security box your (or all machines) to access your VMS
machine for TCP/IP access (or the other protocols that you want to use)
2. After starting the excursion server on your client PC, go to the
control panel and select the account tab. Enter an account for you
machine as you would log into it when sitting in fornt of it. Then go to
applications and create one. To start an X session insert the command
sys$system:decw$session in the command field. Make sure that XDMCP is
not activated. (If XDMCP is activated, you should enable it in the
TCP/IP software on your VMS box. Then you can forget to start the
session as described). Then click on the run button. When you check the
run at server startup, you automatically start an session at server startup.
Jop that helps
