Working with dashboards

Now that you've successfully logged in and have chosen the Global Education Strategy, we can start playing around with different dashboards. Axis has 7 dashboards in total, but for the purpose of this chapter, we'll walk you through the Overview dashboard.

Overview Dashboard

Above you'll see an annotated version of the Overview dashboard. Towards the top of the page you will see the name and description of the strategy you are looking at; this is present on every dashboard. A little below that you will see a breadcrumb of the parameters you have chosen:

Breadcrumb

This is always present so that you know exactly what you're looking at and where you're looking. It tells you what your aggregation type is (more on that later), what year you've selected, the dashboard you are on, and whether you are looking at Mid Year or Year End Values. In this case, we've aggregated by Operation, the year is 2013, the dashboard is Overview and the report type is Year End.

Filters

To the right of the breadcrumb, there are a set of icons that let you finely control the dashboard. The funnel is an icon for Filter By, and this lets you modify all sorts of attributes on the dashboard. In this case, the filters will let you see AOL budget. Other dashboards include other icons to do sorting and searching. The icon farthest to the right is the export icon. This button allows you to export the graph as an image or a PDF.

After that, the page dives into the data. The first portion is an overview of the entire Global Education Strategy. Most prominent are the OL Budget and OL Expenditure. The bar graph adjacent to those numbers give an analysis of all the indicators in the strategy. The section labeled Performance Achievements shows the percentage of indicators that achieved 80% or higher of their said target. This is the most pink bar. The next bar shows the percentage of indicators that achieved 60% or higher their said target. The darkest purple bar shows the percentage of indicators that did not achieve 60% of their said target. The other bar graph above the label Impact achievements is the same measurement except it only uses impact indicators. Lastly, you will see the brightly colored red, yellow and green bar graph. This measures the percentage of indicators that are in the Acceptable range, Unacceptable range and the critical range. These ranges are determined by global standards. The very last bar you see that is striped gray lines shows the percentage of missing or unreported indicators.

Under each of the sections there are two numbers. One specifies the number of indicators and the other one specifies the times selected. The indicator number denotes the number of unique type of indicators. The times selected is the number of time operations have selected those indicators. This concept makes the most sense using an example. Suppose there is 1 indicator, "% of children enrolled in primary education." And let's say Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ethiopia decide to select that indicator. Then there would be 1 indicator and 3 times selected. In actuality, it's slightly more complicated because operations can select indicators for a specific PPG as well, but the idea is the same.

Moving on, if you scroll down you will see a series of cards:

Cards

These cards are determined by your aggregation type. In this case, we've aggregated by Operation so you will see the breakdown of each operation. You will be able to view all the information that you could for the whole strategy in these cards. Immediately, you can see the budget and expenditure. The small flag you see in the upper right shows the impact criticality analysis of the operation (Acceptable, Unacceptable or Critical). The tabs shows the same information about Performance Achievements, Impact Achievements and Impact Criticality. The names have been abbreviated to save space. There are only 6 cards showing when there are actually many more operations. Simply click 'SHOW MORE' to see the next 6.

And that in a nutshell, is the basic usage of the Overview dashboard.

Exercises

  1. What is the 2013 OL budget of the Global Education Strategy? What the Comprehensive budget (AOL + OL)?
  2. What percentage of indicators for the 2013 Global Education Strategy are in the Acceptable range?
  3. What is the OL budget of Jordan for 2013?
