The list does not cover all charcaters commonly used in Portuguese. This one probably still does not cover all european languages but it is a bit of improvement:

re.sub('[^a-zèéeêëėęûüùúūôöòóõœøîïíīįìàáâäæãåçćč&@#A-ZÇĆČÉÈÊËĒĘÛÜÙÚŪÔÖÒÓŒØŌÕÎÏÍĪĮÌ0-9- \']', "", text)
