Is it normal to have to click on the search box in the pop out window to be able to start typing a search ?

Is it possible to make the search box have focus to be able to type straight in to it ?

The issue you are having seems to be caused by the taskbar mods in Start11. Once I disable those, it works as expected.

In general I don't plan to fix specific issues caused by (paid) third party software as it causes a lot of extra work and I don't own the licenses.
