Too large squares background icons

I am using the background as an image of a house plan with rooms. Each room is signed in the background. I also use many different icons: lights, heating, locks, etc. All icons have a darker background, which is larger than these icons. Many icons are labeled with numbers or names. But some of the icons do not have signatures, I do not need them, since the rooms are already signed on the plan, and the icon fully reflects its purpose. But the background of the icon is still there and it is too big. Because of this, I don't have enough space to place other icons next to this on. Please make the background size of the icons customizable.
