# Welcome to Jekyll!
#
# This config file is meant for settings that affect your whole blog, values
# which you are expected to set up once and rarely edit after that. If you find
# yourself editing this file very often, consider using Jekyll's data files
# feature for the data you need to update frequently.
#
# For technical reasons, this file is *NOT* reloaded automatically when you use
# 'bundle exec jekyll serve'. If you change this file, please restart the server process.

# Site settings
# These are used to personalize your new site. If you look in the HTML files,
# you will see them accessed via {{ site.title }}, {{ site.email }}, and so on.
# You can create any custom variable you would like, and they will be accessible
# in the templates via {{ site.myvariable }}.

This website collects outputs and resources to help bridge between
the software engineering research (SER) and research software engineering (RSE)
communities. This effort originated in the April 2024 Dagstuhl Seminar
"[Research Software Engineering: Bridging Knowledge Gaps](https://www.dagstuhl.de/24161)"
(number 24161).

**SE fundamentals** and the **description** are based on SWEBOK. **RSE equivalent** terms and the description of **RSE practice** are based on the opinion of research software developers.
**RSE awareness** and **RSE usage** are coarse estimates of recognition/adoption of the practices for research software. 0=effectively no awareness/usage to 3=widespread awareness/usage. Sources for the estimates are noted in parentheses.
**SER potential** is a coarse estimate of the potential for additional software engineering research to increase the awareness/adoption by RSEs. 0=effectively no opportunity to 3=significant SE research would be beneficial. **Opportunity** briefly describes the software engineering research opportunity.
