This feature will provide a way to introduce settings unique to each gate which will allow them to:

be addressed in order to perform sequenced lighting sequences from one gate to another.
have unique behaviors, responding to alerts differently than other gates
have various lengths
have additional features such as motors

Consider:

IC MCP23017 16 channel or MCP23008 8 channel I2C port expander - allows for additional pins on an I2C enabled microprocessor
