I still link people to this old stack overflow post. We should have a better reference in the KB. This should cover:

  • Coupling of FRAME-System and Balances's AccountData
  • Free vs. locked. vs. reserved balances
  • Lock reasons (e.g. TransactionPayment)
  • Some examples of lock usage (staking, democracy, vesting)

It should include instructions for and an example of calculating an account's spendable balance.

I would see this being a conceptual doc in learn-substrate, although it would be one of the more code/example heavy concept docs. Depending on how it evolves it might make sense to split out a more development-oriented doc into runtime.
