AM/PM difficulty in date picker

I tried to set a time for an event but couldn't enter "am" or "pm" by selecting the "--" after the time and typing "p" or "P". I eventually realized that you could arrow up/down while that field was selected to get the AM or PM to fill in. Typing "A", "a", "P", or "p" should probably work.
