David Lu released a new version of the navigation stack (https://discourse.ros.org/t/robot-navigation-stack-released/7084). I did not yet dug into it, but I wonder if it is a coordinated effort or a parallel project to MBF? Did anyone using MBF tried?

Well, this is very good question... without entering in how this came to happen, no, there's no coordinated effort; both are different projects.
