GitLab: error adding webhook #710

On a fresh repo with a token having api scopes that is known to work. Getting

creating webhook: synchronising webhook: POST https://gitlab.com/api/v4/projects/<org>/<group>/<repo>/hooks: 422 {error: Invalid url given}

Same for a repo without a subgroup.
Issues I can think of:

non-encoded URL
token missing
