Intro

ClyphX offers a robust set of Actions to masterfully control various aspects of Ableton Live. You can unleash these Actions through X-Triggers, which come in four flavors:

  • X-CLIP: Any clip in Session View that follows the correct naming convention.
  • X-CUE: Any locator in Arrangement View with the right naming. X-Cues will perform their Action List when the playhead passes over the X-Cue.
  • X-CONTROL: MIDI controls at your command. X-Controls will perform their Action List when pressed. They can optionally perform a second Action List when released.
  • STARTUP ACTIONS: These trigger every time you load a Live set, as specified in your User Settings.

You can transform any Clip or Locator in Ableton Live into an X-Clip or X-Cue by adding an Identifier in brackets at the beginning of its name. The Identifier can be any word or phrase, but it should only contain letters, numbers, and underscores. Each X-Trigger can execute an Action List.

For instance, a simple Action List might toggle Overdub on/off: OVER. A more complex Action List could mute Tracks 2 and 3, arm Track 4, and turn on the 3rd Device on Track 4: 2/MUTE ON ; 3/MUTE ON ; 4/ARM ON ; 4/DEV3 ON.

When specifying an Action List, separate each Action with a semi-colon ( ; ) as demonstrated above. The Actions in an Action List are carried out sequentially (first action, then second action, and so on), but the processing is almost instantaneous, making it appear as if all Actions are performed simultaneously.

However, X-Triggers (excluding Startup Actions) can also step through an Action List and execute each Action one at a time with each trigger. To do this, prefix the Action List with (PSEQ). For example: (PSEQ) 1/ARM ; 2/ARM ; 3/ARM.

In this example, the first time the X-Trigger is activated, Track 1 will be Armed. The second time, Track 2 will be Armed. The third time, Track 3 will be Armed. On the fourth trigger, it will loop back to the beginning, and Track 1 will be Armed again.

NOTE: For clarity, this document uses CAPITAL LETTERS for Action Lists. However, Action Lists are not case-sensitive. You can use whatever capitalization feels comfortable for you.

X-Clips types

There are several types of X-Clips:

  1. DEFAULT

    • Example: [ID] CLIP SEMI > ; CLIP CENT -25
    • Description: This X-Clip performs its Action List when played (not just launched). This allows Action Lists to be quantized using Global or Launch Quantization.
  2. DEFAULT WITH STOP

    • Example: [ID] REC ON ; 1/ARM ; 2/ARM, UNARM ; REC OFF
    • Description: This X-Clip has two Action Lists separated by a comma (,). The first Action List runs when the X-Clip is played. The second Action List runs when the X-Clip stops playing. If you want the same Action List for both play and stop, use an asterisk (*) for the second Action List.
  3. LSEQ

    • Example: [ID](LSEQ) 1/CLIP2 CUE >1 ; 1/MUTE
    • Description: This X-Clip steps through and performs each Action in the Action List one at a time, each time the X-Clip loops, similar to a PSEQ Action List.

Notes:

  • It takes up to 100 ms for an X-Clip launch to be recognized by ClyphX. If an X-Clip plays for less than 100 ms, its Action List might not be performed.
  • For the Default With Stop type of X-Clip, the first Action List can be a PSEQ or LSEQ, but the second Action List should be a normal Action List.

Global Actions

The MIDI Actions send MIDI messages to the MIDI port selected as the Output port for the ClyphX control surface. Also, all values in MIDI Actions should be entered in decimal.

The SCENE related Actions do not actually Launch Scenes, they Launch every Clip on a Scene. For this reason, they will function similar to Launching Scenes when Start Recording on Scene Launch is turned on.

For Scene selection, you can use a number, a string with double-quotes or a regular expression.

DELSCENE When accessed via an X-Clip, delete the Scene the X-Clip is on. Otherwise, delete the selected Scene. In both cases, it is not possible to delete a Scene if it’s the only Scene in the Set. -

All of the continuous parameters offer several control options via keywords.

Track actions

To operate on a different Track, specify the Track followed by a slash ( / ) before the Action name:

Details for SNAP Actions

X-Clips, and only X-Clips, can store and recall Snapshots of Track and Device settings. The Snap Action is a Track-based Action, but differs from other Actions as it cannot be used in an Action List. Upon playing an X-Clip with a Snap Action, the related settings will be stored in the X-Clip’s name along with your identifier.

You can use modifiers to Snapshot multiple tracks, for example: 1-4/SNAP DEVALL MIX+

SNAP PLAY Store the playing status of the Track. This does not apply to Group Tracks, Return Tracks or the Master Track. -

SNAP Tracks

By default, SNAP actions are recalled immediately. If you want a smooth transition between mix values, you can use a Snap Track.

How to create and use SNAP Tracks?

  • Create a new MIDI Track and rename it to 'CLYPHX SNAP'
  • In clips below, create your snap actions. For example, add a few clips '[] 2/SNAP MIX' to capture mix parameters of the 2nd track
  • After capturing the parameters, click again on a clip and now the parameters will transition to the new saved state

To control the transition speed, rename the track to 'CLYPHX SNAPE [value]', where value can be:

  • a number, in hundreds of milliseconds. Increase the value for slower transitions, 10 is one second.
  • S plus beats number, S4 for example, to have a transition during 4 beats.

You can also add a Rack named CLYPHX SNAP, aka Snap Rack, to the Snap Track. This will allow you to send X-Snaps to the Snap Rack and use the Snap Rack’s first macro to morph between the current values of Snapped parameters and the values stored in the X-Snap.

Track actions for Devices

Device actions are track-based and will apply to the device selected on the track, or on the 1st device. If you want to operate on a different Device, add a number after DEV: DEV3 RESET, will reset the 3rd device and, 2/DEV3 RND, will randomize the 3rd device on track 2.

A device name can also be specified with quotes (i.e. DEV"Auto Filter" RND).

Track actions for Clips

The actions will apply to the playing Clip or if no Clip is playing, to the selected slot on the track. To operate on a different Clip, specify the slot number of the Clip after the word CLIP: 5/CLIP1 LOOP *2

To operate on the selected slot or the Clip selected in Arrangement View, specify SEL (CLIPSEL WARP). You can also specify the Clip name enclosed in quotes (1/CLIP"MyClip" LOOP).

By default, the Clip Note Actions (CLIP NOTES) will apply to all the Notes in a MIDI Clip that fall within the Loop Start/End markers (if Loop is on) or the Start/End markers (if Loop is off). To operate just on a particular pitch (or a range of pitches), specify the name (or number) of the pitch (or range) after the word NOTES.

To operate on Notes that fall on a particular time position (or a range of time positions) in the Clip, specify the position (or range) and use @ as a prefix. For example, if only two scripts are selected, the second script will be CS2 even if the script is selected in Control Surface slot #6. PUSH Actions

Applies to PUSH and PUSH 2 control surfaces, and they should be enabled in your Live preferences.

PUSH DRINS Cause Push to enter the standard Note Mode. This allows you to use Note Mode to control a Drum Rack. This will have no effect if the selected Track is not a MIDI Track. -

User Variables

Defining/Re-Assigning Variables

You can use Variables in your Action Lists to store values (like 42), single Actions (like OVER OFF), or portions of Action Names (like CLIP). There are two ways to define Variables:

  1. User Settings: Define Variables here to make them always available to any Action List in any set. Examples:

    • my_var1 = 42
    • my_var2 = SHOWCLIP
  2. X-Clips/X-Cues: Define or re-assign Variables temporarily (only for the current set) using the same syntax. For example, to re-assign my_var1:

    • my_var1 = 100

These temporary definitions are reset to your User Settings upon set load.

Limitations:

  • Avoid special characters (e.g., umlauts) and the following: semi-colon ( ; ), comma ( , ), equals sign ( = ), dollar sign ( $ ).
  • The percent sign ( % ) can only be used to refer to a Variable.
  • Parentheses ( ( and ) ) are for specifying Expressions only.
  • Slashes ( / ) are for specifying division in an Expression.

NOTE: Variable names should only contain letters, numbers, and underscores. They are not case-sensitive.

Defining/Re-Assigning Variables Programmatically

To define/re-assign multiple variables with similar names and sequential values, use the ASN Action, which takes three arguments: the base name of the variables, the value of the first variable, and the number of variables to create. For example:

  • ASN CLIP 1 10 creates 10 variables named clip1, clip2, etc., with values 1, 2, etc.
  • ASN TRACK 10 5 creates 5 variables named track1, track2, etc., with values 10, 11, etc.

This Action can be triggered from the Startup Action (defined in User Settings) to make the created variables always accessible.

Using Variables

Once defined, you can use Variables in any Action List by enclosing them in percent signs ( % ). Examples:

  • %my_var1%/MUTE
  • V=20 ; 2/VOL %v%

Variables and Expressions

You can use Expressions in Variable definitions/re-assignments. To assign a Variable to the result of an Expression, enclose the Expression in parentheses. For example:

  • v=(%v% + 2) ; %v%/MUTE

In this example, the Variable v starts at 0. The Expression (%v% + 2) evaluates to 0+2, so the result is 2. The next time, it evaluates to 2+2, resulting in 4.

Ensure there is nothing outside the outermost set of parentheses in an Expression. For example:

  • v=((%v% + 1) * 10)

Use quotes correctly when combining strings in Expressions. For example:

  • x=My ; y=Track ; v=(%x% + ' ' + %y%) ; "%v%"/MUTE

Avoid mixed variable types in an Expression. Specify each variable type to combine strings and numbers:

  • x=Track ; y=1 ; v=('%x% ' + '%y%')

This ensures the Expression works correctly.
