It would be useful if the documentation compared xc with its closest alternatives, maid and mask. It looks like maid, mask, and xc are the three prominent task runners based on Markdown.

This mask issue could be the starting point for a comparison: jacobdeichert/mask#46.

Very cool projects there, I don't know anything about either so would need to do a bit of research!

There are quite a few other variations on this theme. I wrote about some of them in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/217/runnable_runbooks/

Here are the projects I have personally tried:

I think I prefer xc over these others, though it's lacking some features (which I am tempted to think would make it even better.) I hesitate to suggest changes or add anything myself because xc is very easy to understand as it is and I'm afraid adding to it would just make things more complicated.
