From DigitalOcean:
Beginning May 14, 2025, the kubeconfig token used to authenticate requests inside Kubernetes clusters will need the kubernetes:authenticate_in_cluster permission enabled. Kubeconfigs downloaded after October 18, 2024 contain tokens with this permission. However, if you have older kubeconfig files (prior to October 18, 2024) , those files should be replaced.
