from emacs shell i type neo4j-client

i see
neo4j-client 2.2.0
Enter :help for usage hints.
Not connected
neo4j#

i type in :help and hit enter, but the process is basically stuck at this point

same issue when logging into a real server, all commands are dead, control-C isn't caught, etc
