For the color scheme, I really like dark blue (the Earth) & gray (the data).
So far I have been considering PuBu which is a classic color scheme from ColorBrewer.
It gives a weird warm and quiet feeling that is closed to the seed vault pic in the website header (see atlasofdata/atlasofdata.github.io#28 for more background).
On the practical side, to rely on ColorBrewer will help to build dataviz styling #2 by keeping good readability standard.
Also these colors are available in most libs. Below in d3js
