This started to happen after we switched to Python 3.

Can't reproduce now. I could have made some Python3-friendly changes to the code, which somehow fixed this bug. But not knowing the details is never ideal.

Should be verified on the target system, and then again with a real Graylog backend.

The problem reappeared. It seems "random". Need to find the cause.

Those messages get a connection refused error. Hopefully this won't happen with Graylog. We'll see.
