Unable to link VS Code to Github with my MacBook Pro

As a starter, I am not abe to link my Github account to VS Code on my MacBook Pro. When I get to the stage where i want to commit, it tells me my commit is empty. My colleagues who uses windows are able to do so, but I am cannot do it on my macOS. Please assist me.
