New contribution to the project, State Estimation

Hello.
My name is Pablo. I am working at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in a project where we are building a program from EPANET to perform the State Estimation in water supply networks, where we are including measures from sensors distributed along the network in order to improve the results of hydraulic calculus, as well as other maybe more useful possibilities like leak detection and calibration of network parameters.
We would like to contribute to the OWA project with our work, provided the project managers deem it appropriate, but I'm new to software developement and don't know how to proceed. Is there a code convention or a documentation standard that I should be aware of? What is the process for submitting contributions and how is revision done?
If there is anything we should be aware about please tell me. We are in the very early stages of our work and will gratly appreciate any advice or reccomendation so our contribution fits well within the project. Also, of course, if you have any question about what we are doing please feel free to reach out.
