RO & RP 1 Installation for 1.6.1
Welcome to the installation instructions for RSS, RO, and RP-1.
Please carefully read and follow every word of this detailed guide. RSS/RO/RP-1 is complex and fragile. Not following this guide to the letter will break things and make you very frustrated.
You will be using CKAN as a tool to aid installation. While you're installing really important stuff (RSS/RO/RP-1) CKAN will suggest extra "recommended" and "suggested" mods for you to install along with them. Do NOT let it install those mods yet! Instead, write down which ones look interesting, we'll come back to them later.
Again, DO NOT EVER allow CKAN to install recommended and suggested mods. When it asks you if you want to install these, deselect all options.
- Install a new copy of KSP 1.6.1. Do not try to install on top of your old modded KSP. It's not going to work.
- Delete all files out of the Ships folder and subdirectories, but leave the folders. This is because CKAN is dumb and we need to fix its stupid hangups about things that don't matter.
- Install CKAN and point it at your new KSP 1.6.1 install.
- Tell CKAN to allow Compatible KSP Versions of 1.6, 1.5, 1.4, and 1.3 (screenshot).
Note: do NOT allow CKAN to install recommendations/suggestions. NEVER allow CKAN to install recommendations/suggestions.
- Via CKAN, install Real Solar System and its dependencies.
- Via CKAN, install Realism Overhaul and its dependencies.
- Be sure to select FAR Continued.
- Via CKAN, revert SmokeScreen version to v2.8.1. The version that gets installed automatically doesn't work correctly (screenshot).
- Launch KSP and make sure everything works.
Note: if you wish to play RP-1, the career mod for RSSRO, follow these steps. Otherwise, if you wish to play RO without RP-1, ignore steps 9-13 and jump to step 14.
- Via CKAN, install Realistic Progression One (RP-1) and its dependencies. Again, DO NOT let CKAN install recommendations/suggestions.
- Be sure to select the Custom Barn Kit - RO Build.
- This will tell you to install Texture Replacer Replaced. DO NOT DO THAT!! It does not work for 1.6.1. Get regular Texture Replacer.
- Delete the RP-0 folder out of your GameData folder
- Download the Master Branch of RP-1 from here: https://github.com/KSP-RO/RP-0
- Inside the downloaded zip, navigate to the GameData folder and copy the RP-0 folder into your installed GameData folder.
- Launch KSP and make sure everything works.
All those mods you wrote down? All the extra ones on CKAN? Yeah, we're going to go ahead and install them now. But first, read the Recommended Extra Mod list and see if anything catches your eye.
Note: if you are playing RP-1, READ THE MOD LIST. Selecting and installing mods from sections 1, 2, and 3 is necessary for the complete RP-1 experience.
- Write down a list of all mods that can be installed through CKAN. Make sure you check against the official extra mod list that they aren't supposed to be installed outside of CKAN.
- Use CKAN to install all mods that are CKAN-compatible.
- Launch KSP and make sure everything works.
- Install all the non-CKAN mods. (Don't know how to install a mod from Github? Here's how.)
- Launch KSP and make sure everything works.
NOTE: SSTU does not work in KSP 1.6.1. You can get SSTU tanks using ROTanks and some of the engines with ROEngines. (read the above mod list). Also, Community Tech Tree is not only incompatible with RP-1, it's completely useless, as RP-1 uses its own historical tech tree.
Congrats, you're done. Here's what you should do next:
- Consider trying some of the optional installation steps below.
- Proceed to New Career Setup if you are playing RP-1.
- Consider some thoughtful musings about your new installation.
- Finally, scroll back up and locate the wiki sidebar. The "Getting Started" section contains a wealth of information for help and instruction. It is recommended that you start by reading through the FAQs and then work your way down through the tutorials and resources.
If you want to have the most up to date changes for Realism Overhaul, then follow these steps:
- Delete the RealismOverhaul folder from your GameData folder.
- Download the Master Branch of RO from here: https://github.com/KSP-RO/RealismOverhaul
- Inside the downloaded zip, navigate to the GameData folder and copy the RealismOverhaul folder into your installed GameData folder.
If you want to try the extra-in-development build of RP-1, then follow these steps and know that you're voiding your warranty:
- Delete the KerbalConstructionTime folder from your GameData folder.
- Download the beta release of KCT from here: https://github.com/linuxgurugamer/KCT/releases/tag/1.4.6.12
- Inside the downloaded zip, navigate to the GameData folder and copy the KerbalConstructionTime folder into your installed GameData folder.
- Delete the RP-1 folder from your GameData folder.
- Download the RC Branch of RP-1 from here: https://github.com/KSP-RO/RP-0/tree/RC
- Inside the downloaded zip, navigate to the GameData folder and copy the RP-1 folder into your installed GameData folder.
If you want to clean up your parts list in the VAB, follow these steps:
- Make empty folders called NoNonRO and NoNonRP0 in your GameData folder. This will hide parts not configured, respectively, for RO and RP-1 in the VAB/SPH while in career mode. Non-configured parts will still be visible in sandbox mode.
