Requested addition of fenestration system (window/shading retrofit) measures

A request was initiated by PNNL/LBNL teams (Katie Cort / Robert Hart) working in a couple of collaborative Commercial Building and Window Assessment projects, regarding adding new measures into BuildingSync related to window/shading retrofit, which includes:

• Secondary window systems (i.e., secondary glazing or secondary window attachments)
• Shading Systems and/or Shading Automation systems

As part of these projects we have been reaching out to Building Performance Standard (BPS) jurisdiction representatives and others working with commercial building audits and retrofits to better understand the commercial building assessment process, including how envelopes and windows are valued as part of the building energy auditing and retrofit/remodeling process. One of the goals of the Commercial Building Assessment analysis is to identify gaps in auditing/tracking tools that could potentially hinder the valuation and implementation of various window retrofit measures. In that regard, we have identified some gaps in the BPS supporting tools, namely Audit Template and the corresponding BuildingSync Schema, which is that list of possible window retrofits included in these tools does not include some of the more common and affordable retrofits, such as commercial secondary window attachments (aka secondary glazing systems, storm windows, window inserts/panels) or shading automation, which have been demonstrated to be minimally disruptive retrofits that can effectively reduce energy and peak loads, improve occupant comfort, and help facilitate beneficial HVAC electrification.
